Atlas of the Known World
You will find not only real world locations, like London or Australia, but also places that the people of that time and culture believed to exist, such as the land of shadows, a faerieland in Celtic Ireland where the myth of Cuchullain is portrayed. You can also find areas which are based in part on literary works which defined in some manner a region for the popular consciousness--so for example, Kipling's Jungle Book informs the mud's portrayal of the Seoni jungle.
Legend is divided into three eras. The dividing points for these eras change according to geographical location, but in general, they imply a given level of technology. The Ancient Era thus encompasses areas like the Aztecs, which were around in the 1400s, but which had more in common technologically with Ancient Egypt.
The Ancient Era[edit]
Full of areas that are magical and mythical in nature. This time period is devoted to portraying ancient cultures and their mythologies. Some cultures are presented in a fairly realistic manner (as in the depiction of Roman Britain) and others are far more magical and whimsical, as befits the legends they illustrate (as in the area based on the Arabian Nights).
Areas Include: Aboriginal Dreamtime, Anasazi America, Carthage, Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, Ancient India, Ancient Nazca, Ancient Rome, Arabian Nights, Aztecs, Beowulf, Celtic Ireland, The Land of Shadows, Pictish Country, Roman Britain, Sumer, Svartalfheim and Tartarus.
The Medieval Era[edit]
Covers up until the widespread use of gunpowder. This is the time of feudalism, elaborate social structures, and the first stirrings of colonial expansionism. This means that it encompasses both the era of alleged chivalry and the height of the power of the Catholic Church. It was a time of great expansionism on the part of the European powers, and it is not surprising that much of the building in this time period on Legend has been done in Europe.
The Industrial Era[edit]
Ending midway through the 20th century, and unique to Legend, offering an experience quite different from the standard fantasy-based environments of many MUDs. It is here that one can find the Victorian period, which has charmed so many in novels, and can visit the battlefields of the World Wars. Ranging from the heyday of British imperialism to the ravages of two World Wars, this era offers everything from big game hunting in Africa to gold rushes on opposite sides of the globe.
The Out of Character Lounge[edit]
Exists in order for players to take a break from fictional and historical immersion. Among them are the Wild Boar Tavern, which offers lounge space, lecture halls, a gift shop, and the immortal offices.
Legends Of The Past[edit]
Isn't exactly any one particular geographic area that is actually physically located in the main game, but instead it is comprised of legendary characters that roam the lands much as they once did. The area is designed to honor those characters as well as to preserve and bring Legend's rich history of players to life.
